The Smell of the Kill

Michele Lowe’s comedy about men, women, marriage and malice

Opens at the Asolo on January 21, 2005

Sarasota, Florida The Asolo Theatre Company opens The Smell of the Kill by Michele Lowe on January 21, 2005, a wickedly funny dark comedy about men, women, marriage and malice. The production is directed by Michael Edwards and features in the cast Devora Millman as Nicky, Carolyn Michel as Debra and Deanna Gibson as Molly, and David Hershman and James McGinnis as their husbands who are heard but not seen. The opening night show is followed by a “Mingle with the Stars” champagne reception in the lobby.

“This play is extremely funny. The set up resembles something you would see on the TV series Desperate Housewives. But The Smell of the Kill enjoyed stage success long before that TV show became popular,” says Howard Millman, the Asolo's producing artistic director.

Michele Lowe (with tongue firmly in cheek) sets up the following situation: Three couples have been enjoying a monthly dinner party for years. After dinner, the husbands putting competitions in the dining room, while the wives gossip in the kitchen. But on this particular night, the party takes an unexpected turn, leaving the ladies in a precarious situation. Nicky's husband takes the other men on a tour of his new walk-in meat freezer in the basement. The men get stuck inside it. Join the three women as they work through the ultimate question – the pros and cons of “what to do now.” The Smell of the Kill runs a dynamic 75 minutes with the action and dialog filled with clever, surprising turns.

“The play is entertaining, the cast is wonderful, and the director really knows what he’s doing. I believe audiences will love this play; it’s contemporary, funny and a little wicked,” adds Millman.

The Smell of the Kill is presented in rotating repertory from January 21 to May 5, 2005, in the Asolo’s Harold E. and Esther M. Mertz Theatre, at the FSUCenter for the Performing Arts – 5555 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, Florida.
