A TALE OF TWO CITIES (a new musical)
A TALE OF TWO CITIES is based on Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel. It is set in England and France over a period of several years in the late eighteenth century. Sydney Carton, a dissolute English lawyer, is re-awakened to love and commitment by the good-hearted Lucie Manette and sacrifices his own life to save her husband during the French Revolution.
Seeking these roles and/or understudies for these roles:
All age descriptions are “reads as”
[LUCIE MANETTE (seeking understudy)] (Early 20s – British accent) Soprano with belt/mix whose range spans sweet lullaby to dramatic mix/belt; sing to soprano high A. Not just another ingénue – Dr. Manette’s beautiful young daughter is the ideal combination of maternal nurturing and natural sex appeal. She is radiant and luminous with a warm vulnerability and playfulness.
[CHARLES DARNAY aka EVREMONDE (seeking understudy)] (Late 20s/Early 30s) Bari-tenor sings to high A.
Handsome, masculine, dashing leading-man Frenchman who’s also charming and likable enough to make us believe Lucie chooses him over the Carton. Aristocratic without being stuffy.
[MISS PROSS] (mid 40s to 60s - Non cockney English accent. ) Some singing. Lucie Manette's no-nonsense English governess and friend. A real pistol with a sharp comment for just about everything. Of course, crusty on the outside and inside a real mush.
[MARQUIS ST. EVREMONDE] (early 40s - early 50s) Baritone sings to E flat / falsetto sings to F#. Predatory, immoral French aristocrat. Uncle to Darnay. Handsome, angular, prissy and capable of projecting great menace and contempt.
[GASPARD] (30s) High baritone/tenor, sings to A. French peasant and budding revolutionary whose child is run down by the Marquis St. Evremonde. Gaspard sneaks into the Marquis’ chateau and stabs him to death.
[C.J. STRYVER](Late 30s-early 40s. Non-cockney English accent.) High baritone. Big, blustering pompous ass. Blustering senior barrister; Carton's employer. This guy has no idea what a buffoon he is or how he comes off. Physically could be either average build or a bit rotund – it’s really all about the personality.
[THE SEAMSTRESS] (reads 16-18) Lyric soprano sings to E flat in staff. Timid, pretty young woman unjustly condemned to die on the guillotine. Should have an almost angelic, child-like sweetness and innocence in both her voice and demeanor.
[YOUNG MAN] (mid-teens to early twenties) Heroic raw tenor with a peasant edge sings to Bb . Brother to Madame Defarge; appears via flashback during his dying moments after being wounded by the Marquis St. Evremonde.
Also Seeking
YOUNG BOY and YOUNG GIRL To Play Ages 5 – 8. Should be under 52 inches tall, perfectly adorable and sing sweetly.
