With a reputation for provocative, relevant work, award-winning playwright/screenwriter Craig Wright is best known in the theater community for his award-winning plays The Pavilion, Recent Tragic Events, Orange Flower Water, Grace, Melissa Arctic, Main Street, Molly's Delicious, and numerous others. The Pavilion was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and the American Theatre Critics' Association’s Best New Play Award; Recent Tragic Events won an ATCA Best New Play Citation Award; and Melissa Arctic won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play. Mr. Wright’s television writing credits include the HBO series Six Feet Under, which received an Emmy nomination. He has also written and produced the popular television shows Brothers and Sisters, Lost, and is the creator of ABC’s Dirty, Sexy, Money.
Wright's political drama Lady takes place during a hunting trip between three lifelong friends. The trip turns takes on a tragic turn when one of the friends, a U.S. Congressman reveals that he is changing his political party and his stance on the war in Iraq. During the course of the play, his friend’s trusty hunting dog “Lady” gets lost in the forest, the three struggle with conflicting feelings of loyalty and disagreement, and each man’s ulterior motives surface as their walk in the woods becomes a life changing event.
Lady’s significance in our current political climate makes it particularly timely and a must see for both savvy theatregoers and anyone interested in the political climate of America today. Asolo Rep is one of only a few theatres producing Wright’s play during this election year. Lady was first commissioned and produced by Northlight Theatre in Chicago, Illinois; and had it’s West Coast premiere at The Road Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It performed there to rave reviews.
Asolo Rep presents Lady, in the intimate ambiance of The Jane B. Cook Theatre, running from Friday, May 9th through June 1st.
