More about the play...
In Africa, the Syringa tree is a fragrant, flowered tree that can survive in shade or blistering sun. In this one-woman play, the tree is a magic sanctuary for a young white girl living in South Africa under apartheid. Elizabeth’s greatest pleasure is to swing in the giant tree that shades her back yard. She loves to play, to dance, to sing, to hear her father’s stories and to tease her nanny. But this is South Africa in the 1960’s and Elizabeth’s world is about to change beyond her imagination. It’s the incredible story of one young girl coming of age in her beautiful, unbalanced homeland.

The Syringa Tree ran for nearly two years and broke all box office records at Playhouse 91 in New York City. It won BEST PLAY OF THE YEAR at the Village Voice/Obie awards! The critics raved and audiences were swept away by its sheer brilliance. Now you too can experience this extraordinary play.
