Peter Pan Opens the Asolo Season with Flying, Fantasy and Fun for the Young at Heart
Kick-off Celebration to Launch Asolo’s spectacular New Season
SARASOTA, FL – The delightful Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, by J.M. Barrie features Eric Shelley in the lead role as Peter, and brings Flying by Foy, the most respected stage flying company in the world, to the Asolo when Peter, Wendy, John and Michael take flight. The play, opening on November 19, comes complete with Captain Hook and his pirates, Indians, the Darling Family, the Lost Boys and of course, Tinker Bell. The opening night show is followed by the Asolo’s big season kick-off, champagne reception and “mingle with the stars” celebration. Members of the media are invited to photograph and interview the cast and creative team at the party.
Skillfully directed by Gus Kaikonen, and with enchanting set and costume design by Steven Rubin, the play is presented by the Asolo Theatre Company in the historic Harold E. and Esther M. Mertz Theatre from November 19 to January 1 - on the cusp of the play's and the Mertz Theatre's 100th birthdays!
Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up is timeless, fanciful, and enchanting. One of the most produced and revered characters of the 20th century; Peter Pancharms us all with the power of believing. Children, grandchildren and “inner children” love this family classic and its cast of characters. Ever since Peter Pan first soared through the nursery window and flew Wendy, John and Michael Darling to Never Never Land, this fantasy adventure has delighted generations. The tradition continues as The Asolo Theatre Company performs this wonderful family play during the winter holidays.
Flying by Foy is the same company that flew Mary Martin’s Peter Pan character on Broadway in the 1950s, and has successfully impressed audiences around the world since. They have been contracted to fly the Asolo’s cast, which includes several children from the community (ranging in age from six years old to their teens) who were lucky and talented enough to be selected for the cast as Lost Boys and members of the Darling Family.
“The phones have not stopped ringing since we opened ticket sales on Monday,” says Howard Millman, the Asolo’s producing artistic director. “I really don’t think I have seen such a response in years.”
Season subscriptions, $99 Play Passes, $25 Student Passes, and single tickets are now on sale. To purchase tickets ($15-$47), please call the Asolo Box Office at 941-351-8000 or toll-free at 800-361-8388 or visit us on the Web at www.asolo.org.
